Exeter

The ghost of a 19 year old girl whose grave was violated haunts the old family graveyard, the Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Mercy Brown died on January 18, 1892. Two months after her death, her father dug up her grave because he thought she might be a vampire, responsible for the deaths of his wife and oldest daughter as well as the strange weakness suffered by his son and him. It turned out that they were actually suffering from tuberculosis but George Brown thought a vampire was sucking the life out of them. Brown and a group of people, including the district medical examiner found that Mercy had moved in her coffin. When the doctor removed her organs, he squeezed blood from her liver and heart, which made them believe that that she was indeed a vampire. To keep her from raising from the dead, he burned her heart and liver on a rock near the grave, and then used the ashes to make a medicine to cure himself and his son. This medicine did not work.

Over the years there have been many reports of seeing a strange blue light moving slowly through the cemetery. It is believed to be Mercy's spirit, displaced from her violated grave.
